Six Torquay players chosen for GBR squad and win the Shields
The Geelong Bowls Region selected 3 Torquay men and 3 women to play in the two 24 player squads. For the first time, the Men's & Women's competitions were played concurrently at the one venue-Webbcona Bowling Club in Wendouree on Sunday 23rd January, 2022
The Men played for the annual Whykes Shield, a contest between Ballarat Highlands District and Geelong Bowls Region. Chosen to play were Brett Irvine, Gary Banks and Joe Issell. Daryl Kitchin was also named but was unable to attend. The men played an all day fours competition with composite shots score winning the shield. This year Geelong were the winning side. Well done.
The Women also annually play for the Valerie Page (Ballarat) Shield and the Elaine Webster (Geelong) Shield. Chosen to play were Corry Hooiveld, Effie Wake and Kas Harrington. Also in 6 teams of four players, the first game of 15 ends before lunch was composite shots for the Page Shield - won by Ballarat +10 shots and the second game of 15 ends in the afternoon was for the Webster Shield - won by Geelong +20 shots. The team of Jenny McLean, Effie Wake, Julie Connolly and Kas Harrington (s) was also the best GBR team of the day with 2 wins +20 shots.
Well done to our representatives, and bringing home two shields.
